You Cannot Change Yesterday, But You Can Change Today

Let me tell you a story…

Larry and David are walking in Manhattan one day and while looking at the various buildings, they start a conversation about how prices have soared so high since they were kids growing up in this city. A building that could have been bought for $100,000 is now in the tens of millions of dollars, demonstrating the absurd appreciation value that real estate has experienced. Larry says to David, “Only if I bought a building then, I’d be a rich man now.” David then looks at Larry and says, “Well what’s going to be the next big thing. Let’s find that piece of real estate and buy it now.” Larry responds, “Now? Now is too late. We missed our chance buddy.”

It seems like a silly story, but how many times do we prevent ourselves from taking a risk to see something appreciate over time. We don’t have a time machine. We can’t go back in time and change what we did yesterday. But we have the power to change today and tomorrow. We always have the ability to continue to create opportunities for ourselves. If you want to make money, there will always be new buildings that will appreciate in value. There will always be stocks that soar. If you want to be successful at a sport, it is never too late to start training. You can’t say to yourself, “It’s too late.” If you want to lose weight, you need to start today. If you want to build muscle, you need to start today. Because 6 months will roll around sooner than you know it, and if you haven’t started today, then in 6 months you’ll be saying to yourself, “Only if I started 6 months ago then I’d be done.” You can’t be held back by fear. We just need to jump into the deep end and take a risk. There are no guarantees in life and there are no certainties that doing something will have a desirable end result. But there is a guarantee that there will be no good result at all if you don’t put in the effort to get there.
