Study: Gym Equipment Holds More Bacteria Than You Thought

In today’s dose of gross news, a recent study published by Fitrated.com shows just how dirty your favorite pieces of gym equipment are. If you thought gym equipment was sanitary, think again.

Brace yourselves:

On average, a treadmill has 74 times more bacteria than a water faucet and free weights were studied to have an average of a whopping 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

Check out the infographic below from Fitrated.com showcasing the results of the study.

The results are incredibly surprising and alarming. Perhaps you have known that gym equipment had the potential of being unsanitary, but perhaps you didn’t realize the magnitude of the conditions.

Even with employees of fitness centers cleaning and disinfecting the equipment on a daily basis, we should take matters into our own hands by wiping down the equipment before and after our use, not only to protect others but also to protect ourselves.

Stay clean!
