When I do bench press my chest never seems to hurt, its always in my arms. Why?
Question: Hi Amer, great body. My question is whenever I do a bench press my chest never seems to hurt. It's always in my arms. I mean I get a pump on my arms and they fail before my chest feels anything. The only way I can force it on to my chest is to do a dumbbell press or flies but it is still very difficult. Is there a technique that you could share. My arms aren't too bad but my chest is zero.
Amer the Hammer's Answer: Thank you for the question,
This could be due to a number of reasons! You are using your synergistic(assisting) muscles too much is probably the main cause for this. Try to eliminate the usage of your arms from the movement, make sure you are executing the movement properly, and begin with a lighter weight.
It is imperative that you develop a mind-muscle connection, so that you feel and workout the muscle properly. My advice to you is that instead of just going through the motion of the bench press, squeeze your pec muscles one the eccentric, and concentric phase of the movement. Keeping that in mind will performing the movement will definitely increase the chance of working out the muscles of the chest!
Let me know if you have any other questions, and let me know how it goes :)
