Walmart Reveals 'Great for You' Label
Walmart will now be labeling foods that they deem as nutritional. The nation's largest grocery retailer will implementing a bright green label with the words "Great for You" on those healthy foods. For now, the labels will only be applied to Walmart-brand foods, but other brands can use the label if their foods meet specific nutritional guidelines.
Walmart has already made some progress by building locations in areas of the country that lack full-service grocery stores and reducing the cost of healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.
In a company statement, Walmart said the label "“must meet rigorous nutrition criteria informed by the latest nutrition science and authoritative guidance from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Institute of Medicine (IOM).”
It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if countless Americans will embrace this new system created by Walmart. Some people may look at this as a "lecture" on food shopping, and some may see this as a way to benefit Walmart more than the actual consumer. However, Walmart has worked hard to establish the criteria, collaborating with government agencies, nonprofits, and health and nutrition experts. Only one-fifth of Walmart's house-brand items will make the grade and earn the label. At the end of the day, this could be a great win-win for both Walmart and food shoppers nationwide.
