Can sound waves eliminate the need for condoms or vasectomies? A new animal study, published in the journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, revealed that an ultrasound to zap testicles can be the male birth control of the future.

Researchers found that zapping the testicles of rats with a therapeutic ultrasound machine, the same type used by physical therapists to treat muscular injuries, eliminated the germ cells that produce sperm. As a result, this significantly reduced the sperm count of the rats, making them infertile. The best results were seen when the testes underwent two 15-minute zap sessions, two days apart, and applied through warm salt water. 

Despite the potential as a future means of contraception, much is to be learned about the procedure and more studies will be determined if there are unexpected or long-term effects of the treatments. 

Still, how many guys would be interested in getting their balls zapped? If there are no long term effects, sure, that wouldn't be an issue for most males. But it's going to be hard not to think that kind of stuff can't do long term damage. Time will only tell. Much is to be learned about the procedure and more studies will be determined if there are unexpected or long-term effects of the treatments.
