Stephen Paea Breaks 225 lb. Bench Press Record at 2011 NFL Combine

Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea broke the 225 pound bench press record at the 2011 NFL Combine. Paea benched 225 lbs. for 49 reps. Even though Paea was unable to run or perform on-field drills due to arthroscopic knee surgery in January, Paea dominated the bench press like never before and established himself as one of the strongest pro prospects.

The previous record was held by current Giants guard Mitch Petrus and former NFL players Leif Larsen and Mike Kudla who all benched 45 repetitions. Back in 1999, Justin Ernest did 51 repetitions for 225 lbs. but that hasn’t been confirmed as an official statistic at the time.

Paea was the two-time Morris Trophy winner as the Pac-10’s top defensive lineman, totaling 29.5 career tackles for loss and 14 sacks despite frequent double teams. Paea is projected as a potential late first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
