Oysters

Oysters

Oysters provide a supply of zinc above any other food source. You receive more than 360% of the daily recommended supply of zinc in one serving of oysters. Zinc is an important element in numerous health areas. It helps to heal wounds, strengthens the immune system and is essential in overall growth and bodily function. Zinc has also been found to improve vision and assist with carbon dioxide delivery to the lungs.

These “pearls of the sea” are high in protein and low in fat and calories, making them an excellent superfood for those involved in fitness programs as well as weight loss diet plans. One 3-ounce serving of cooked eastern oysters possesses only 87 calories while the Pacific variety packs only 137 calories. Compare that to a 3-oz serving of lean, white chicken breast which contains 130 calories.

Oysters are also rich in potassium, magnesium and healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, all of which help to lower blood pressure prevent heart attacks and strokes. Cholesterol levels are also improved and inflammation that can lead to heart disease is reduced. A portion of oysters is also full of vitamin E which is a strong antioxidant that works to protect cells from damage by free radicals.
