Manny Pacquiao Wants to Do MMA

Manny Pacquiao is willing to do MMA. During a press conference that took place with's Bill Emes and Michael Marley in regards to Pacquiao's thoughts on trying MMA, Pacquiao told them " I want to, but they [promoters and management] don't want me to fight".

Pacquiao said that if promoter Bob Arbum and adviser Michael Koncz gave him the okay, then he would consider transferring sports. Koncz then cut in with an insinuating remark, "you know that you could do what you want".

Later, Pacquiao admitted that it was "too brutal" when asked for his opinion on the sport, however, it is hard to tell if he is serious about making a committment.

Odds are, if push came to shove, Pacquiao would never make the transition. Boxing pays much better than MMA does. Floyd Mayweather made $55 million last year in fights proving that, making him the 3rd highest paid athlete in America. Not to mention, Pacquiao probably wouldn't fare too well in MMA (atleast not for a few years until he learned the sport). As gifted of an athlete as Pacquiao is, he certainly doesn't know the first thing when it comes to a good defense to wrestling, ground work, submissions, etc. We saw how Former Heavyweight Champ James Toney got absolutely thrashed against Randy Couture at UFC 118. Boxing is not enough to go against these experienced brawlers; even the best boxers can't keep up with the wrestling that guys like Frankie Edgar bring to the table or the submissions that BJ Penn brings.

MMA and Boxing are two entirely different sports. Although they seem similar because they have similarities in terms of the physical brutality that isn't shown in basketball, football, or baseball, they are two entirely different animals. Just like if any MMA guy stepped in the boxing ring with Manny Pacquiao, they would get destroyed, Manny would get thrashed in the MMA cage as well (unless he put his heart and soul into training).

A boxer doesn't have time to react and use his powerful fists and combinations when an experienced grappler is coming at him. Yes, if Manny connected with one punch with no gloves it would do some serious damage (probably knock his opponent out), but it is so tough to get a clean punch. Almost all fights end up on the ground, and punches don't have any force behind them when coming from your back.

And the same token goes for MMA guys who try to box. It takes years of experience to become a tremendous upper body striker. The defense, footwork, and ability to transfer momentum from your core into your fist is something that boxers have fine-tuned and perfected.

Couture admitted that it would be stupid for him to box Toney- because he even knows that Toney would give him a similar beating in boxing that Couture gave to Toney in the cage. It would be stupid for Manny to leave boxing and try an MMA bout; and it would be just as stupid for a UFC guy to challenge Pacquiao to boxing.
