MP: What sparked your interest in health and fitness?

KW: I realized very early, even back in Elementary school that I was a bit faster than the other girls on Field Day & was the only girl who could climb the rope in Gym glass. I guess it just came natural! Once I got to High School I decided to put that ability to use! As a Captain of the Cheerleading Squad and a competitive Track athlete it was important to me to maintain a healthy, toned physique! As far back as I can remember I have been conscious of my looks & eating habits as well as striving to bet he best Athlete I could be. I began lifting weights my freshman year in High School. I took “Fitness for Life” as an elective as well as “Strength Training”. I had very knowledgeable coaches on and off the track that taught me how to lift correctly & educate me in nutrition.

 

MP: You were a great track athlete and cheerleader in high school. What made you want to do these sports and how did this prep you for a career in health and fitness?

KW: Cheerleading just seemed like the perfect fit! I could be fast, strong, flexible, loud & pretty! Being Captain all 4 yrs on JV & Varsity it was my responsibility to make sure we had sharp motions, solid stunts, High jumps and loud voices! I had to discipline them as well as myself. There was practice everyday, camps all summer, basketball games on Saturday and Fundraisers on Sunday! I loved having the responsibility and the Non-stop action! Since I was so consumed with Cheerleading, I wasn’t able to run track until my Senior Year. However, I made sure I got a taste of everything they had to offer! I ran the 100 open, 200 relay, I did high jump, triple jump, long jump, and shot put! I wanted to run all 4 years because I just knew I was fast & I wanted to do something that was a bit more of a challenge and I could be more competitive. That competitive drive and hunger for more just carried over into my college days where I continued to take heath & wellness courses and hit the gym every night after class.

 

MP: Describe the competitive nature of being in the NPC Figure division? What hard work went into this?

KW: What doesn’t go into Competing in Figure? It’s a beauty pageant for fit girls! I think the beauty of competing is the Journey that you go on while prepping for a show! It’s just my personality to not settle for mediocre! I want to be the best, therefore I GIVE my best! With the intense training and rigid dieting - it is HARD to do that everyday. It seems each show is bigger, the talent is better and the judges are more unforgiving! If you want to become pro someday, you have got to be on your A game & show up EVERY time in top notch shape & better than the girl next to you. Your hair, makeup, color, suit, posing, confidence, attitude and presentation must to be perfect to catch a glance from the panel of judges. So when you are feeling tired or want a “little cheat” you have got to think about the girl that might be standing next to you in that lineup & KNOW you did every single thing in your power to be better!
Then I bet you won’t be so tired & hungry any more ;)

 

MP: What are some of your biggest accomplishments when it comes to competing?

KW: I took 2nd place at my very 1st show and then went on to win Overall, 4 weeks later at the Carolina Clash 2007. Then I moved to the National level placing:
12th - 2009 JR USA’s
12th-2009 USA’s
1st - 2010 NC State Championships
12th- 2010 JR Nationals
9th- 2010 JR USA’s

 

MP: Describe your relationship with Optimum Nutrition & ABB. What have they done for your career?

MP: If you could pick only one exercise that has had the best reward for you, what would it be and why?

KW: Always has been, always will be... SQUATS. It’s the #1 exercise I believe everyone should master. It is a full body workout when you squat; you engage your core, back, hips, quads, hamstrings and calves. Best overall move!

2nd would be the Pull Up. They will totally develop your back! No amount of lat pull downs or bent over rows can make your back as sore as 100 Pull ups!! Try it, I dare ya!


 

MP: Besides working out, how do you stay active?

KW: I love, love, love to be outside! So I hit the lake as often as possible and swim, or go for a hike or long walk/run with my American Bulldog -Miller Girl yes. like the Beer. I am lucky enough to live close to the US White Water Center and that place is a TON of fun!!! They have Rock climbing, Kayaking, Trekking, Zip lines & paddle boats! I love trying all sorts of new things. I can’t just focus on 1 “hobby” or have just one thing I do! I want to do it all!

 

MP: As a full time chiropractic assistant, describe the benefits of seeing a chiropractor?

KW: I am a firm believer and advocate that Chiropractic & Acupuncture are 2 things that keep me healthy & happy. I live by these 5 things: Diet, Exercise, Rest, Chiropractic & Acupuncture. I don’t see a doctor; I don’t take medication not even a Tylenol.

The spinal column holds the nerves that lead to every single organ, structure & function in the body. There is a huge misconception that Chiropractor's only treat “back pain” Yes they do, as well as over 2,000 other conditions! If there is even the smallest interference within your spine the nerves that are within may not be able t send out messages to your body at their full capacity, therefore causing aches & pains. Think of it as a bad reception on a phone call... same thing is happening in your spine!

My Dr. Says that everyone should at least be checked! We know we can help if you come into our office! Plus 97% of the time patients respond favorably & it cost thousands of dollars less than hospital bills!


 

MP: What's your favorite quote? How does this bring meaning to your life and career?

KW: ~ “If not me then who, if not now then when”? ~ My Uncle Scott
He told me that once & I always try to live by those words as simply as they are said. Just GO and DO IT! NOW! Whatever it may be!

This quote just means to me that no dream is too big! So go ahead, DREAM IT & more importantly believe it!! I have recently learned that FAITH and the law of attraction is the secret to having anything you want in life.
I would have never gotten this far without a dream and the confidence that I CAN.

 

MP: What is your best advice for a woman looking to get in shape?

KW: DIET is 1st!! Get your diet right and engage in ALL kinds of activities. Don’t tie yourself to a treadmill or think you can “work off” that cupcake you had today.
~Abs are made in the kitchen. Eat whole, natural foods and practice portion control.
~ Don’t give up! It doesn't happen over night or in a week or a month! IF you are struggling just re-asses and keep on trucking!

 

MP: What are your future goals both personally and professionally?

KW: ~ To help as many people as possible.
~To own a home on the lake with a boat & to open and CrossFit Facility.
~ To turn pro in NPC Figure
~ To compete in the CrossFit Games
