It's All About Character
Through visual observation of people that have crossed paths with my life, I have come to the conclusion that, for the most part, people are lazy. Don't get me wrong, there are many people out there who are internally driven to make the most out of their life. However, most people look to just get by. They go to work because they have to. They seek for prospective clients because their boss tells them to. They sell financial instruments because bringing home money is their number one incentive. They go to graduate school because their parents tell them to do so. They do an assignment because their professor slaps a grade on it.
Through the aforementioned endeavors and appropriate conseuqences, you should begin to see how prevalent authority and external influences are in your motivation to accomplish things. These external influences play a vital role in your everyday life. Everything you've done in your life was for a purpose. But take a moment and think of the things you've done in your life. Was it for the purpose of improving yourself and society or was it for the previous reasons I mentioned: put simple, because you had to?
If you took away those external motivational influences and incentives, you'd really begin to notice how unproductive people really would become. If people didn't have to work to make money, do you think they really would? Obviously, we have our rare few people in this society who are driven enough to make something out of their lives regardless of the financial enticements out there. However, do you think we would we have the multitude of doctors, lawyers, and professionals that we have today? Would we have as many janitors that we have now at our local school? Would we have made the progression and leaps in healthcare that we enjoy today? Would we have such great professors at universities and graduate schools? Would we have anything near the technology that we benefit from today? Most definitely not.
Look, I am not here to tell you money is evil. If you've ever had one conversation with me, you'd know how important I think financial incentives are to our society. They are instrumental to our drive to get more out of ourselves and they create an efficient economy with immediate progression towards a proper allocation of resources. But the point I'm trying to make does not involve fiscal policy, politics, or money. It's about you!
I want you to evaluate your life and see if you've done things for the right reasons. Are you one of those lazy individuals who look to just get by performing the bare minimum so you can just relax for the rest of the day? Or are you a go-getter who looks to improve yourself and by extension, society, each and every opportunity you get regardless of the benefit you can receive from it? We need more of the latter in our environment; we want the kinds of people who inherently possess a desire to be as good as they can be, those who inspire others around them to do good.
The common man knows of no pain and just goes through the motions in an attempt to do the bare minimum in terms of work. Don't be that common man. Be something more. Taking your time out to read this is the first glimpse of evidence that you want more out of yourself. You're taking time out of your day to be something. That's excellent news. Be proud of that! You're better than the common man already. But I want you to take each and every moment of your day as an opportunity to be the best person you can be.
You were not placed on Earth to only take care of yourself. Thinking that way is purely egotistical and selfish. Be motivated to help others out. Be that people-person internally driven to use your skills and qualities to improve others’ situations drastically. Do not become of a certain profession because you want to make money. You'll never make it through that way. Be motivated to be of your utmost assistance to society. If you are a lawyer, clients come to you because they are in dire need of your help. Your knowledge of the legal system is something that others request so you can represent them as well as they would represent themselves.
So take heed to this advice and do realize that every one of your actions transfer over into others' lives. Take each moment as an opportunity to improve yourself and take each moment as prospect for ameliorating society. Be successful, not in terms of wealth, but in terms of the person in society you should be. Always lead a life of encompassing the highest character.
