Interview with Fitness Competitor Mary Grace Scarpelli

Name: Marygrace Scarpelli

Residence: New City, New York

Age: 42

Occupation: Pre- Kindergarten Teacher

Height: 4’ 11”

Weight: 90 pounds

MP: How did you get into fitness Marygrace?

MS: I have been working out since I was 16. It started with dance, gymnastics & cheerleading. When I was 18  I worked at a local fitness center and became immediately taken by weight training and cardio. Since then, I have been working out and not until August 2010  did I decided to compete in my first ever Bikini Competition.

MP: Why do you enjoy working out so much and where do you find the motivation to get into the gym and train your hardest every day?

MS: I love working out because it makes me feel incredible… stay healthy, feel young and its fun ! I became motivated when I started seeing serious  results this past April and others complimented me and I asked me what I eat and what I do for exercise and it made me want to workout out harder and smarter.

MP: Describe your club called Fit and Fun forever. How does this club inspire, motivate and guide friends and others in fitness and nutrition?

MS: I created this club to help inspire & motivate my friends and others with their specific fitness goals. They chat with me weekly. I am currently studying for my personal fitness certification and I just love helping others look and feel good about themselves.  At first, I was just talking with moms and friends but now I am helping inspire teens, men & women of all ages.

MP: How do you balance time between being a single mom, a teacher, and various other things that you do? What are some of the potential risks and benefits that go along with this?

MS: I have a jam-packed schedule but somehow it all gets accomplished. I start my weekdays at 5am and weekends at 7am. I do cardio at home before work and train mostly on my lunch hour. This way it frees me up to spend time with my son afterschool , homework, his sports and errands. At work, I am able to complete my lessons plans on my break when my students are either in art or music.

MP: What are some of your fitness and modeling credentials? What has been your proudest accomplishment thus far?

MS: I competed in the NPC East Coast Bodybuilding, Figure & Bikini Show in Paterson , NJ on October 2, 2010 and took 2nd in Masters Bikini.  That was my first ever competition and by far my most proudest accomplishment in fitness.  I also  did some  modeling and advertisement for a weight loss management company.

MP: How did it feel to take 2nd at the recent 2010 East Coast NPC Master’s Bikini Competition? Tell us about how the competition went.

MS: It felt amazing! It all went so quickly and all I really remember was meeting such nice women backstage & becoming friends with most of them and sharing our food & desserts and laughing together. It was so much fun !

MP: Are you going to compete again next year to take down the champ and claim the crown? If so, what are some things that you think you need to work on and improve upon from this year’s competition?

MS: I  plan on competing again this spring and  the East Coast Show next year.  I am going to work harder on bringing in a much tighter overall package.

MP: Why do you want to be in personal training and what could you bring to a potential client?

MS: It is one of my passions to help others do what I love to do.  I will bring knowledge, dedication and care for my clients with lots of support and enthusiasm !

MP: What have been some of the most interesting things you have learned as you've studied for your personal training certificate?

MS: Having to learn about the body and how it works in specific detail has been very interesting as well as challenging.

MP: What is your fitness regimen like? What kinds of training have worked best for you?

MS: Off season I weight train and do cardio 4 days a week.  When I was training for the competition, I trained 4 days a week and did cardio 6 days week. What worked best for me was upper body 2 days and lower body 2 days. The stepmill and treadmill is what I use for cardio along with the occasional elliptical machine.

MP: How often do you vary your routine in the gym?

MS: Usually every 4 weeks but my coach lets me know if I need to change anything.

MP: Describe your diet plan and some of the challenges that go along with such discipline?

MS:

My Off–Season Diet was designed by my Coach Warren Fahrenfeld – Bodybywarren.com

Meal 1- Special K Cereal, skim milk & a small banana

Meal 2- DotFit Bar

Meal 3- Chicken on Whole Wheat Bread , small apple

Meal 4- raw almonds

Meal 5- Chicken, brown rice, mixed veggies

Meal 6- Chobani Vanilla yogurt

Sticking to it is definitely a mental challenge! I do look forward to my weekly cheat meal!

MP: Do you prepare your own meals or do you eat out? Can you find healthy meals out or do you find it necessary to prepare your own meals to maintain your physique?

MS: I prepare my own meals.  I prepare and pack my six meals for the day the night before and when training for competition I  prepared three days worth of meals ahead of time.

MP: What is your typical day like, both in the gym and away from it?

MS:  Wake up walk my new puppy and do cardio at home, get ready for work and my son ready for school, go to work teach Pre- K students, gym at lunch and pick up my son from afterschool, make dinner, errands, football/baseball practice, homework, get him ready for bed and read him a story , then sometimes have time to chat with friends before going to bed .

MP: What is something that people may not know about you?

MS: I love candy, chocolate, coffee and I can recite lines from many of my favorite movies !

MP: Besides working out, what are some other hobbies that you enjoy?

MS: I love to travel, cook, go dancing, attend sporting events and listen to a variety of music.

MP: Who is your dream celebrity crush and what makes him so special to you?

MS: I really don’t have a celebrity crush but there are many cute ones.

MP: Where do you see yourself in five years both personally and professionally?

MS: In five years, I will still be teaching, definitely personal training as well as competing.  Personally I am happy and content so I hope it stays this way.
