I Don't Want to Be With My Boyfriend Anymore. What Do I Do?
I don’t want to be with my boyfriend anymore. I feel terrible about it. We have been together so long. What should I do?
If you don't want to be with a guy anymore, you shouldn't feel bad about it. It would be much worse for you to stay with him and be dishonest about your feelings. He is your boyfriend, not your husband. You have not made a lifetime commitment to him. If you turn the tables, and he was in your shoes, would you want him to stay with you if he wanted out? Think of it like this:
You are freeing him to be with the person he was meant to be with, and if you don't want to be with him, then it's clear he wasn't meant to be with you.
Freeing him will hurt him if he wants to be with you, but the pain won't last forever. You are doing him a favor in the long run.
Sit him down and tell him you want to talk. “What you say is very simple: I'm sorry _________ but I can’t do this anymore. I just don’t see a future together.”
Be prepared to be bombarded with questions as to why. Think about how you may answer this, but if you are set on moving on, make it clear that there is nothing he can do to change your mind. Just be frank. Think of it as the painful but preferred band-aid approach to breaking up. Simple, fast, immediate, instead of long, drawn out, and in the future. Don’t take up any more of his time if you no longer want to be in his future.
