Hey Peter, What are your specific goals in terms of building muscle? How much muscle you trying to build? What is your diet like?

Start using your body weight. I mean take push ups,sit ups, chins, dips and every exercise which is possible using your body weight. I did it before I began to lift, and I gained 7 kg after 4 weeks. ofcourse I increased meals from 3 meals at day to 6 meals at day. After couple of months, you will be stronger, get more muscles and it is very nice introduction to exercise and good introduction to weight lifting. In the beginning you can buy Whey protein, multis and fish caps. That is only what you need. You cant just begin with heavy weights, so you need start training with light weights or with your bodyweight. You can begin with weights, but you need to take many reps in the beginning. Why? To minimize injury and not be overtrained,which is very known problem to all beginers. Eat a lot because playing basket is like burning a lot of calories. So you need to eat at last 6 times at day and meals need to be protein,carbo rich with good fat ofcourse. Eat at least 2 gram protein pr kg bodyweight. If you are 80kg you need to take 2 gram * 80 = 160. If you would gain faster you can increase to 3-4 gram pr. kg bodyweight. But you can allways start easy. In the beginning it is difficult to eat a lot, but after couple of weeks it will never be a problem.
