I just started riding an exercise bike, what would be a good starting point for the miles? And should I add resistance like hills?

I would start out at 2-3 miles and if that is to easy then increase 1 mile until it is hard but now impossible to complete. Stay with that mileage and increase when it gets to easy or every 2 weeks. And hills if you want resistance and to keep the miles lower.

I started out doing 5 miles with hills and increase to 10 miles but the miles are not as important as the time spent on the bike. Start with 30 minutes and increase as tolerated from there. But always check with your doctor before starting a workout routine.

One thing I like to do on my home exercise bike is to do some DB work as I'm riding. I'll take a couple of 25's and do either shoulder presses or lateral raises. Then I'll do one arm tricep extensions (the over the head kind). Lastly, I'll do some curls. I'll ride for a few minutes, then start the cycle all over again. After about four iterations, I'm pretty soaked.
