Fix Your Alignment to Improve Your Golf Game

Fix Your Alignment to Improve Your Golf Game

As you read this golf tip, please keep in mind that it may not apply to your unique needs. Always consult with your local PGA professional (that would be Scott Seifferlein if you are new to how this works) before attempting to apply any golf tip you have read from a newspaper, magazine, book, internet, your 20 handicap brother-in-law, etc.

There are a variety of ways to miss-align yourself in your pre-shot routine, causing incorrect swing path to the ball. In general, most right-handed golfers aim too far to the right (left handed golfers too far left) This causes the club-head to move outside the correct path and then across the ball (in relation to target line) in the downswing to compensate for the poor alignment. The result is often a loss of club-head speed and/or a pull and pull slice.

A great misconception is that your body needs to be aligned to the target. In reality, your body needs to be aligned parallel to your target. Here are the key check points for alignment.

Clubface- We don't want to dispel all your beliefs, so here is your chance to shine! Yes, the clubface should be aimed in the direction you want the ball to end up (your target perhaps). You may find it helpful to pick out a spot just ahead of the ball that is on line to your target. It is much easier to line up to an
object that is a few inches in front of your ball compared with a target that is a hundred yards away. As you set-up to the ball square (aim) the club face to that spot. Now you can be confident that your clubface is square (aimed) to your real target

Feet- To check the alignment of your feet, place a shaft along the back of your heels or the front of your feet (heels are better) after you have set-up to the ball. Stand ten feet behind the ball and look to see where the shaft is lined up. It should be aligned to the left (right for left handed players) of and parallel to your target.

Hips & Shoulders- You will need a video camera or a friend with good eyes to help you with the alignment of your hips and shoulders. It is imperative that your hips and shoulders are in line with your feet and all three are parallel to the target. Between feet, hips, and shoulders, your shoulder alignment will stand out as the most important. Your swing path will follow your shoulder alignment.
