Fatty Foods Affect Fertility
Being overweight or eating junk food can affect fertility, researchers say.
Researchers examined nearly 100 men on a range of diets. They found that those with the highest total of saturated fat consumption had lower semen counts and concentrations. Those men in the top third of fat consumption had 43 percent fewer sperm and 38 percent lower sperm concentration than those in the lowest fat consumption group. The study was published by the journal Human Reproduction.
On the other hand, researchers found that men who ate more omega-3 fatty acids had a larger amount of normal shaped sperm. A reduced sperm count and concentration hinders the chances of fertilizing an egg while normal-shaped sperm is important.
Poor nutrition is responsible for so many health problems that this should hardly come as a surprise. On the other hand, this really confirms the importance of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s reduce inflammation throughout the body and good for overall cardiovascular health. Now, we know that they may be linked to healthier sperm. The benefits of this fatty acid are huge and you should consider eating more fish or buying fish oil pills to get enough omega-3s in your system.
