Derek Redmond was a former Olympic British sprinter who held the British record for the 400 meter sprint and won numerous gold metals in the 4x400 meter relay. However, his career was spoiled by a series of injuries, and he is best remembered for his performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. During his race, Redmond tore his hamstring in the 400 meter semi-final but fought through the pain and, with assistance from his father, managed to finish the race as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Redmond is a true inspiration for us all. Even in the face of failure, Redmond wouldn't quit. He might of not won the race but he finished it. He didn't give up and he never failed. While running with a torn hamstring might not be a good idea and we wouldn't recommend doing this, it still shows Redmond's absolute commitment to something. In addition, his love and support of his father shows the importance of your family and/or close friends. These people will always be there for you, and will help you move forward even when failure is pushing you backwards. You should cherish those close to you because they will be there for you to help you accomplish your goals. Redmond's dad is a great example of this and helped him finish the race.

Ask anyone who saw this race and I bet they can't remember who finished in first. But they remembered who finished last.
