Foods to Avoid When Trying to Get Abs

Foods to Avoid When Trying to Get Abs

Six pack abs are a common goal for many bodybuilders and physical fitness enthusiasts, and knowing what foods to avoid in order to reach this goal can help you speed up the process. With the right food choices and gym or workout schedule you can get a six pack even if you think this is impossible. Great abs are the result of a lot of effort, and for these muscles to be well defined and visible you need to eliminate any stored fat in the abdomen as well as building up the muscles here.

The best food choices will be natural foods that are whole, fresh, and processed little if at all. Try to keep your foods simple and as close to the original source as possible. Look at the number of ingredients that a food contains and choose options with as few ingredients as possible. This eliminates the possibility of extensive processing or numerous chemical additives. Your muscles require a number of nutrients in order to grow or even maintain their current size.

Certain foods will sabotage your ab workout and prevent you from getting exceptional results and the awesome six pack that you are trying for. Some things that you should never eat when doing abs include:

  • White Bread and Bleached Flour Products- These food products contain no nutritional value at all, and the bleaching process involves a number of chemicals and methods that strip all of the nutrients from the end product. These choices can lead to fat retention or digestive buildup and these can wreck a six pack quickly. Bleached products and baked goods that contain bleached products should be avoided for good health and optimal physical fitness.

  •
  • Foods High in Starch with Few Nutrients- Items that contain a lot of starch but few if any nutrients should be eliminated from your diet if you are trying to work on your abs and get visible results. This includes french fries, potato chips, and other starchy choices like white rice. A better choice would be lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetable that are easy to digest, or complex carbs like oatmeal or quinoa.

  •
  • Fast Food with Little Nutritional Value- No matter how often you hit the gym few people can resist the occasional fast food favorite. If you must indulge in this type of meal then choose menu choices which are nutrient dense and have the right type of carbs. If you are having a pre workout meal then balance between simple and complex carbs, at other times focus on complex carbs and avoid most simple forms.

  •
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup- This product is just sugar, and it should be avoided if you want to develop an impressive six pack. Unlike regular table sugar high fructose corn syrup is harder for your body to digest and it is diverted through the liver. This food may also be marketed as corn sugar so make sure that the ingredient list is closely examined before you buy foods.

  •
  • Highly Processed Items- Processing removes nutritional value while also making the food easier to digest. Foods that are highly processed are typically full of added chemicals in order to add flavor and prolong the shelf life, and this is as far from the source as you can get. The end result is a snack or meal that does not provide nutritional support and that can contribute to fat gain and poor health.

  •
  • Preservatives. Additives, and Artificial or Altered Ingredients- Avoid all foods that contain numerous chemical additives, preservatives, artificial flavors, and artificial colors. These ingredients are added to improve the flavor, texture, or appearance of the food so that it seems more natural. These products usually include frozen meals, lunch meats, hot dogs, and many other items.

  •
  • Artificial Trans Fats- Trans fats are another problem food, especially if you are trying to develop a rock hard six pack that stands out. This type of fat will lower your good cholesterol numbers, raise your bad cholesterol in the blood, and clog your cardiovascular system. Trans fats are quickly converted into stored body fat and this can cover the muscles in the abdomen and cause them to be hidden.

  •
  • Junk Foods- Candy, unhealthy snack foods, and other types of junk food are named this way because they are useless as far as nutrition is concerned. Junk foods will add a lot of bad fat and calories to your diet but they do not contain the essential nutrients your abs need to develop fully and reach their peak condition.

  •
  • Soft Drinks- Soft drinks represent empty calories and large amounts of high fructose corn syrup. Both of these make these drinks a very poor choice when you are doing abs, and at any other time of the day as well. Instead of a Pepsi or Coke why not have a glass of water, or better yet a glass of fresh fruit or vegetable juice?

  •
  • Foods that Cause Digestive Distress, Gas, or Bloating- This can include cheese, apples, onions, peppers, celery, asparagus, most cruciferous vegetables, and cabbage. Gas, bloating, or other symptoms of digestive distress can cause you to cut your ab workout short due to discomfort. Any foods that cause any digestive distress symptoms should be avoided when you are doing abs.
