Braylon Edwards Arrested for DWI
Just when things were going great for the Jets...Just when things were going great for Braylon, the New York Jets' wide receiver went out and made the seconnd biggest mistake of his life. Early this morning, Braylon Edwards was arrested for drunk driving at 5:15 AM this morning. According to cops, he had twice the legal limit of alcohol in New York State in his system (.16 over the .08 legal limit).
The 27-year-old star receiver was pulled over in his Range Rover at 34th Street and 12th Avenue in New York City for having tinted windows, however, once the police smelled alcohol on his breath, his charge immediately took a turn for the worse.
After Edwards turned the corner on the football field, by catching five passes for 45 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's victory over the Patriots, Edwards regressed in life. Braylon was brought to New York to be the playmaker for Sanchez that the Jets were in desperate need of given their lack of offense during the first half of last year's season. Edwards showed glimpses of that all-star WR New York needed, given his athetic talent, ability, and incredible feet in the game against the Patriots, but clearly has a lot of work to do off of the field to remain a Jet.
Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said "we are very disappointed in Braylon's actions this morning...We are reviewing the information with the league and will impose the appropriate disciplinary measures."
The Jets took a chance by signing the questionable Edwards after he was charged with an assault and battery, after beating up a party promoter and Lebron James' close friend just days before he was traded from Cleveland to New York. Edwards settled the case by pleading no contest to aggravated assault and he received a suspended 180-day jail sentence, whilst being fined $1,000 and placed on probation. Now it appears that Cleveland's guess that his status as a model citizen is still questionable is quite accurate.
As if Edwards hadn't learned from his mistakes this past week when he picked up an inexcusable silly taunting penalty after his TD score, Edwards has proven to be a liability to this team. Braylon would have proved to be a deep threat at Miami next week (he had a big game the last time he played at Miami), but I am sure he we will be sanctioned by Goodell's locked-down league. Similar to the suspensions that PIT Ben Roethlisberger, NYJ Santonio Holmes, and HOU Brian Cushing are facing now, Edwards will get his. Goodell has respect for keeping the league clean of all scandals and will likely give Edwards at least a 2 game suspension for his failure to behave within the confines of the law.
The Jets (1-1) are facing the Dolphins (2-0) in a pivotal week 3 matchup to gain hold of the AFC East and Edwards' mistake leaves the Jets in peril, whereby New York has only 3 receivers to count on: Jerricho Cotchery, Brad Smith (with a shaken up jaw), and David Clowney. Clowney will get his opportunity to show why he remains a Jet and whether he'll be able to keep it that way.
The Jets will be forced to move away from their air attack that we saw last week (now that Edwards will be out and more focus will be on Cotchery and Keller) and get their ground-and-pound game going (the Shonn Greene we saw in Iowa and against the Bengals and San Diego in last year's playoffs when Thomas Jones had misfortune with his aching knees) and to win games with their astounding defensive play against the unconventional, but dangerous Wildcat offensive threat. As if the Jets couldn't afford to lose anyone else (Kris Jenkins out for the season, Calvin Pace with a broken foot, Darrelle Revis with a strained hamstring, Nick Mangold with a hurt shoulder, Jayson Taylor with a hyperextended elbow, and Santonio Holmes to a 4 game suspension), Edwards just placed the Jets in an even deeper hole to back the summer trash talk that put an X on their backs even more so than the Saints.
