Nutritional Advice Q & A
Are Pre-Workout Supplements Worth Taking and What Should I Take?
Alex from Miami, Florida asks:
I have eaten so healthy over the past couple months and have always tried to have the proper amount of protein in my diet. Yet, I haven't seen the gains I want; I believe I can achieve so much more strength and size! I feel like my diet can only go so far. I am so tired from working a typical 9-5 job. I can eat well at work and throughout my day but I can't train well. I'm always so tired and now I feel like it's my time to get the proper pre-workout supplement. I feel like it's so much easier for me to eat well than it is to train well. So many of my friends have recommended taking Jack3d. Should I take their word for it and take Jack3d to get a proper pre workout boost?
Alex…thanks for your question. You're concerns kind of remind me what I used to go through. Pre-workout supplements are a very important part of my workout when it comes to building muscle, getting lean, and lifting some serious weight! As someone who works 8-9 hours a day, I need that extra boost in the gym when 5 PM rolls around. Coffee, Red Bull, and 5-hour Energy just don’t cut it for me. I don’t really wake up and feel motivated. All it does is hurt my stomach and deflate my muscle fullness. Certain caffeinated products, especially coffee, are very catabolic in nature, meaning muscle wasting. However, the synergistic compounded formula in specific nutritional supplements provide the anabolic hormonal environment necessary to not only wake you up but to give you a full muscular pump for vascularity and fullness. Hence you will get the most results from your workout in the gym meaning increased muscle mass and strength.
You're right about Jack3d in that so many people are talking about it. I would say that right now Jack3d is the most popular supplement on the market. However, I don't feel it should be. Along with Jack3d, Cellucor C4 Extreme has taken the reigns as a top pre-workout supplement of choice.
In my opinion, C4 Extreme has a much better ingredient profile than Jack3d. C4 Extreme uses Creatine Nitrate whereas Jack3d relies on Arginine to elicit NO benefits, making it ineffective. The reason this is ineffective is because Creatine Nitrate promotes a better vasodilation by directly converting NO3 (Nitrate) to NO2 (Nitric Oxide) in the body, resulting in rapid muscle volumizing due to an increase in creatine uptake. Jack3d relies on Arginine to do the job, which truly doesn't work nearly as well.
In addition, Jack3d is a proprietary blend so you really can't tell what you're getting with it. People liken Jack3d to cracked out energy with a heavy crash and not much else. C4 has a pretty generous amount of Beta Alaine, resulting in more clean energy.
I could always get very detailed when it comes to the scientific nature of these products. However, just making it easy for you to understand, go with Cellucor C4. I don't think you'd ever take a different product. Thanks for your question and keep asking!
Keep training your heart out and never look back!
