Albert Pujols workout training routine focuses on hitting each part of his body twice a week and to do at least 2 days of cardio a week. He wants to maintain his muscle mass rather than trying to grow too big, where he feels like his body is too tight. He doesn't care about looking ripped. He knows he has some body fat but he believes the extra weight is to his advantage because that’s where his power comes from. Think about it...when you hit a baseball, the more weight that goes into the ball, the further it will travel (so long as you hit it on the sweet spot!). The 6'3, 230 lb. Pujols performs best when his body is loose and flexible. Pujols stretches for at least 10 minutes before and after a workout, and he sits in an ice bath after games. Stretching is extremely important for athletes, especially for baseball players. Baseball players like Pujols are constantly moving and twisting throughout the course of a game. You see so many baseball players pull hamstrings, even more so in other sports. Stretching both before and after a workout will help prevent against any of those tweaks. Not to mention, ice baths help reduce swelling and tissue breakdown. 

 

In terms of his diet, Pujols eats five meals a day, his biggest meal being right after his workout. That's when he eats all the carbs he wants because his body needs them right away after his workout to create that insulin spike to replenish glycogen stores and to start the muscle building process. He also drinks two or three protein shakes a day.  In season, Pujols eats as much as he can since he is burning so many calories playing baseball and wants to keep his weight up.
